| This subsection is dedicated to the unsung heroes of radio and television broadcasting, those men (and women) who worked behind the scenes, affectionately known in the studios as “The Back Room Boys”. As Webmoustress of The Pumamouse Website, I know that there are often enormous amounts of time and effort spent in the production of anything which is intended for public viewing, hearing, consideration. I have great appreciation and respect for anyone who works behind the scenes, regardless of their profession. So often their contributions are not recognized or acknowledged. For example, a quilt may be admired for its artistic beauty and even its practical warmth and comfort, but the quilter is not always credited for its creation. The countless hours spent cutting and piecing the tiny swatches of fabric together are seldom estimated, much less appreciated. It is even more rare that the work of the weaver who wove the fabric before it was cut, or that of the spinner who spun the thread to sew the pieces together, is considered. And, the name of the farmer who grew the cotton from which the fabric and thread were created...well, I think you will agree, even the quilter probably never thinks or cares about that. In the case of a radio or television production, the finished program may be a work of genius and excellence and enjoyed as such, and the writers, directors, producers, and actors may be praised for their talents. Yet the names and contributions of those who work diligently behind the scenes to ensure that it is broadcast without interruption or error are seldom known to the listener or viewer, and too often and too quickly forgotten by the more famous entertainment personalities who owe them, at the very least, their thanks. Admittedly, “The Back Room Boys” is a term first invented by radio station personnel, and still associated with those who work behind the scenes in the radio and television studios. The entertainment industry coined the phrase. Yet, in my opinion, it is a fitting title for anyone in any profession whose work is seldom known or understood or fully appreciated. This subsection of The Pumamouse Website has been created to include the stories and recollections of “The Back Room Boys” of radio and television broadcasting which have kindly been shared with The Pumamouse. By clicking on “The Back Room Boys” links directly below, you may read letters and essays, and see photographs which I hope will provide some insight and a rare glimpse into a somewhat secret world. These are the stories behind the stories, all as seen and heard through the unique perspective of “The Back Room Boys”. I wish to express my thanks in advance to all who shall contribute their time, their efforts, and their experiences for our benefit, and my sincerest gratitude to those who have already done so. Thank you for your consideration. The Pumamouse (MaryAnne) 25 October 2003 |
