| EXCERPT FROM A LETTER WRITTEN BY PAUL STEPHENS TO THE PUMAMOUSE (2002): Rob Vickers was born in Sydney Australia. Formerly the first Programme Manager of 702, he is arguably the most highly regarded of all people in South Africa's radio industry. He joined Lourenco Marques Radio in 1951 and remained in LM until 1960. He continued to work for them into the mid 60s. Along with David Davies, Evelyn Martin, Paul Nel and others, Rob presented many radio shows including LM's "Teen Beat" at 5pm. Rob was also Assistant Programme Manager to David Davies. Rob joined Issie Kirsh in creating a highly profitable Radio SR which transmitted from Swaziland. From this success, Issie Kirsh started Channel 702. Radio 702 (as it has been known for a number of years) is part of the Primedia group, which acquired Highveld Stereo about 6 years ago. Rob Vickers has played an incredible role in broadcasting, and has influenced the lives of many within the industry. He auditioned Darryl Jooste, Alex Jay and Jim Hicks (who now manages two station in the UK), trained David Gresham and gave Gary Edwards his first LM announcing position. Would you believe it, Rob is still in the industry, training announcers at the SABC in Johannesburg. He has also been a great influence in my life, not only as a mentor but as a very dear friend. He auditioned me at the age of 17, took me under his wing and trained me. I became 702's first afternoon drive presenter at the age of 18. We remain in constant touch even though I am now in Australia. Here's a pic of Rob taken in the early 80's. I'm proud to have associated so closely with this wonderful man, and have no doubt that many others feel the same. Warm Regards Paul Stephens (Former Presenter 702 / Highveld Stereo and Radio 5) |
