Joining Squares:  To join squares, place them right sides together and slip stitch through back loops only.  This allows the squares to lay flat when finished.  When all of the squares are joined, you can add one more border round using the same color yarn as you used in Round 5, or alternating with the colors of the squares.

HOW TO MAKE A SOLID GRANNY SQUARE
(FEWER HOLES)

Regarding these instructions, please note that the word “SOLID” refers to the type of stitching, and not the color.  Multiple or single colors may be used whenever creating Granny Squares, but the term “SOLID” here refers to the lack of openings which result from the additional stitches worked in each round.

NOTE:  I tend to use 4 ply Worsted Weight yarn and hook size “I” for my Granny Squares.  You should use whatever yarn and hook size works best for you.  I also like to work my rounds with the same side of my work always facing me, so that there is a definite right and wrong side to the finished afghan.  This is the way I was first taught to make Granny Squares, and I believe it is the most traditional method.  However, you might wish to turn your squares at the beginning of each round, to eliminate the obvious distinction.

NOTE:  If using “G” Hook, (this makes the squares even more solid-looking, and the finished afghan even warmer), crochet 5 Rounds with the square color and use border color for Round 6.  (Round 5 = 5” square, Round 6 = 6” square.)  If using “I” Hook, crochet 4 Rounds with the square color and use border color for Round 5.  (Round 4 = 5” square, Round 5 = almost a 6” square.)

The Ring:  Make a loop on hook, Ch 6, Sl St to first Ch to form a ring.

Round One:  Ch 3 to count as first DC, 2 DC into ring, Ch 2, 3 DC into ring, Ch 2, 3 DC into ring, Ch 2, 3 DC into ring, Ch 2, Sl St to top (third chain) of beginning Ch 3.

Round Two:  Ch 3 to count as first DC, 2 DC, 2 DC into corner, Ch 2, 2 DC into corner.  (3 DC, 2 DC into corner, Ch 2, 2 DC into corner) three times.  Sl St to the top (third chain) of beginning Ch 3.

Round Three:  Ch 3 to count as first DC, 4 DC, 2 DC into corner, Ch 2, 2 DC into corner.  (7 DC, 2 DC into corner, Ch 2, 2 DC into corner), three times.  2 DC, Sl St to the top (third chain) of beginning Ch 3.

Round Four:  Ch 3 to count as first DC, 6 DC, 2 DC into corner, Ch 2, 2 DC into corner.  (11 DC, 2 DC into corner, Ch 2, 2 DC into corner), three times.  4 DC, Sl St to the top (third chain) of beginning Ch 3.  Finish off.  This makes one 5” square.

Round Five:  BORDER ROUND.  Made a loop on hook.  Sl St into corner hole, (the one to the right of the finished end tail).  Ch 3 to count as first DC, 1 DC into corner.  (Ch 2, 2 DC into corner, 15 DC, 2 DC into corner) three times.  Ch 2, 2 DC into corner, 15 DC, Sl St to top (third chain) off beginning chain.  Finish off, leaving a 2” tail.  This makes one 5.75” square.

AUTUMN AFGHAN
Granny Square afghans are traditionally comprised of bright multi-colored squares, worked from scraps, trimmed with a black border and stitched together.  However, there may be endless variations to dear old Granny’s original theme.  These general instructions should get you started.

HOW TO MAKE A BASIC GRANNY SQUARE (OPENWORK)

NOTE:  I tend to use 4 ply Worsted Weight yarn and hook size “I” for my Granny Squares.  You should use whatever yarn and hook size works best for you.  I also like to work my rounds with the same side of my work always facing me, so that there is a definite right and wrong side to the finished afghan.  This is the way I was first taught to make Granny Squares, and I believe it is the most traditional method.  However, you might wish to turn your squares at the beginning of each round, to eliminate the obvious distinction.

NOTE:  After any round, you may finish off and join a new color, or continue working in the same color.  These instructions are to continue in the same color.  To change colors, please see the instructions for Border Rounds.

Round Two:  Sl St in next 2 DC, and also Sl St one time into corner hole.  This makes it neater.  Ch 3, 2 DC into corner hole, Ch 2, 3 DC, Ch 2, 3 DC into same corner hole, Ch 1.  *3 DC into next corner hole, Ch 2, 3 DC into same corner hole, Ch 1.  Repeat from * two more times, (including last Ch 1).  Sl St to top (third chain) of beginning Ch 3.

Round Three:  Sl St in next 2 DC, and also Sl St one time into corner hole.  This makes it neater.  Ch 3, 2 DC into corner hole, Ch 2, 3 DC in Ch 1 space on Round Two, Ch 1, 3 DC into next corner hole, Ch 2, 3 DC into same corner hole, Ch 1, 3 DC in Ch 1 space on Round Two, etc, etc.  End with Ch 1, Sl St to top (third chain) of beginning Ch 3.

Continue adding rounds until your square is as big as you want it.
To finish off, when last round is completed, (slip-stitched to beginning Ch 3), cut yarn 2” from hook, make one more chain, pulling tail all the way through loop to form knot.

Border Rounds:  Using Border Color Yarn (Black), make a loop on hook, Sl St into corner hole, (the one to the right of the finish end tail).  Ch 3, 2 DC into corner hole, Ch 2, 3 DC into same corner hole, Ch 1, 3 DC into Ch 1 space of previous round, etc, etc, (same as other rounds).

Joining Squares:  To join squares, place them right sides together and slip stitch through back loops only.  This allows the squares to lay flat when finished.  When all of the squares are joined, you can add one more border round using the same color yarn as the border rounds, or alternating with the colors of the squares.
