| Welcome to the "GRANNY SQUARE AFGHAN" webpage of The Pumamouse Website. |
| The following original crochet pattern is provided for your possible use with best wishes for many happy hours of handiwork and success from The Pumamouse (MaryAnne). MATERIALS: "Red Heart" or any brand of 4 ply Worsted Weight Yarn 32 oz Pink (Or any medium color) 32 oz Green (Or any dark color) 39 oz Pink & Green & White Ombre (Or any tri-color ombre to match) Hook: "I" With Pink, make 58 (4 Round) Solid Granny Squares. With Green, make 59 (4 Round) Solid Granny Squares. With Ombre, crochet Round 5 on all 117 squares. Join all squares together using a slip stitch and Ombre, creating a 9 square by 13 square solid piece of work. Border Rows 1-3: Use Ombre Border Rows 4-6: Use Pink Border Rows 7-9: Use Ombre Border Row 10: Use Green Finish off and weave in the tail of the yarn. Add Scalloped Edging as follows: Border Row 11: With Green, *SC in the corner chain, **Skip 1 stitch, 5 DC in next stitch, Skip 1 stitch, SC in next stitch. Repeat from ** across, ending with a SC in the corner chain. Repeat from *, making scalloped edge on all four sides, ending with a SC in the corner chain. Finish off. Work in the beginning and ending tails of the yarn. Note: There should be 61 scallops along 2 sides (9 squares), and 84 scallops along the other 2 sides (13 squares). Finished Measurements: 68" x 94" Please Note: When I made this afghan (a decade ago!), as I did the border rows, I put 2 DC in each corner of every square, thus making 4 DC between the squares where they are joined. At first, I thought this was too much because it made the edges curl and ruffle. In fact, it gave the afghan a lovely lacey effect. However, not everyone likes a frilly afghan. Therefore, if you want the afghan to lay flat, you might wish to put only 1 DC in each corner of each square, thus making 2 DC between the squares where they are joined. I hope that these instructions might be useful to you. Good luck! The Pumamouse (MaryAnne) January 2003 |
