SPRINGBOK RADIO
This question has often been posed by website visitors who are eager to hear the sounds of yesteryear, and it is likely to be asked even more often now that The Pumamouse Website has dramatically increased in size and traffic capabilities.  If you have pondered this enigma, please prepare yourself for a healthy dose of brutal honesty.

The simple answer is that The Pumamouse respects all existing copyrights and broadcasting rights.  Granted, I have located literally hundreds of South African OTR recordings in the USA and Canada and elsewhere in the world, and returned them to South Africa, routinely donating them to the SABC Radio Sound Archive for permanent preservation.  However, to my knowledge, the copyrights and broadcasting rights for these programs still belong to the SABC, just as they have since the productions originally aired so many years ago.  Therefore, to my knowledge, these recordings may not be broadcast in any way, including via the Internet, without the express permission of the SABC.

Recently, the SABC kindly granted permission for the very limited use of selected South African OTR productions as part of the Vintage Radio program which is currently airing in South Africa every Thursday evening from 7PM to 8PM on Radio Today 1485AM (medium wave).  To date, no permission has been granted for the inclusion of whole program downloads via the Internet, and so none are available at The Pumamouse Website.

Personally, I regret my inability to provide downloads of whole programs to the world via the Internet, and yet I am extremely grateful to the SABC for their allowance to share these programs with the South African listening audience of Radio Today 1485AM.  I hope this candid explanation clarifies the situation.

What's that I hear?  Grumbling?  Now, before you judge the SABC too harshly for their enviable broadcast rights, please pause a moment to ask yourself a question.  Did you ever lift a finger and press a button of a tape recorder to preserve South African OTR for historical reference?  If so, I commend you on your foresight, and I congratulate you on your ability to hear your private collection whenever the mood strikes you.  If not, perhaps you should be grateful that someone somewhere did, and if possible get yourself to Johannesburg on Thursday evenings to hear it again...or at least ask someone there to lift a finger this time around on your behalf.  Through the work of many individuals, most of whom you will never know, you have been given a second chance.  My most sincere advice is, please, don't blow it.

I do appreciate the fact that not everyone in the world is fortunate enough to have access to the Vintage Radio program airing on Radio Today 1485AM.  Indeed, I know firsthand.  After all, the Radio Today signal does not reach as far as the USA, home of The Pumamouse.  In consolation for any inconvenience my stubborn respect for the applicable laws might cause to my website guests, I have created the Nostalgic Old-Time Radio section.  Many South African OTR productions were based in whole or in part upon American originals.  If you are craving a large dose of audio nostalgia, I hope that you might enjoy downloading and hearing samples of these original American OTR productions, believed to be in the public domain.

Thank you for your interest and consideration.
