| This webpage is intended mainly for those website visitors who have expressed their curiosity regarding the ever-increasing size and basic nature of The Pumamouse Website. The complete website history, featuring a list of all webpages and the dates upon which they were included at this website, is available within the "Help! Help! I'm Lost! Sitemap" section. There is also an essay regarding the history of the South African Old-Time Radio section, available within the "South African OTR" section, (included in the "Pumamouse Pieces Of The Puzzle" subsection). Most website visitors are satisfied with that much background information. However, this webpage has been created for the extra inquisitive and/or technically minded and/or commercially minded website visitors who wish to know more. It is included "FYI" (For Your Information), to answer a few "FAQ" (Frequently Asked Questions) which are not addressed elsewhere, and it is included here, in the "Pumamouse Observations" section, because this seems the most logical place for it. For example, have you wondered about the technical and/or statistical stuff regarding this website, such as the overall size? At present, The Pumamouse Website consists of approximately 1000 individual webpages, totaling approximately 350MB in size. I believe most people would agree that 1000 individual webpages is a formidable number, but 350MB might not seem very large when you consider the fact that 700MB of data can fit upon a single data CD. Yet, when you take into account a few other technical facts, you may get a better understanding of just how big this website is at present. (And, it is still growing!) Most importantly, images, such as photographs, are routinely included at a modest resolution of about 100dpi, unless otherwise stated, and sound files are routinely included in .mp3 format, compressed to 16Hz and 24kbps. Admittedly, the low resolution of image files and high compression used for sound files reduces the visual quality and sound quality, respectively. However, it is necessary to keep the image file resolutions low and the sound file compressions high so that the image files and sound files may be downloaded successfully and be seen/heard by all who wish to see and hear them, worldwide. Why? Well, not everyone who visits The Pumamouse Website is fortunate enough to have a super high speed internet connection like those which are available in some areas of the world via satellite or cable or DSL. Many internet users are still using the older standard of connecting via dial-up modems, myself included. By keeping the image files and sound files relatively small, I can increase the likelihood that everyone will be able to receive them expediently without too great a risk of "timing out" and being disconnected during the download process. Personally, it infuriates me whenever I am rudely dropped offline during any download process, and I do not wish to inconvenience my website guests, so image files and sound files are gently "squished" accordingly. The added benefit of this routine practice is that I am able to fit more images and sounds into less space. Remember that figure of 350MB? Well, it may not seem like a very big number, but it presently includes all of the website text plus literally hundreds of images and several hours worth of sounds. As for the popularity of The Pumamouse Website, you may have noticed that there is no "guest counter" display of the total times which the website has been accessed. I have not included a counter on any of the webpages which comprise this website because the readings which they provide are terribly misleading. Most available counters display the total number of times a website has been accessed, rather than the total number of individual persons who have accessed it. Also, they include all of the times which the website has been accessed by the person who is creating it. I might visit a single webpage of The Pumamouse Website dozens of times during its construction, and each time would be counted, then displayed, thus making the webpage appear far more popular with the general public than it truly is. Also, I doubt if most people out there really cares how often The Pumamouse Website has been accessed by other viewers. What matters to most website guests is whether or not they are enjoying their own visit. In my opinion, the use of a "guest counter" display on a website is nothing more than a gimmick designed to mislead website visitors and/or website owners about the popularity of a website. Therefore, I prefer to monitor the popularity of The Pumamouse Website through more accurate and detailed statistic reports, which can be generated and calculated to not include myself as a website visitor. I have monitored the statistic reports for this website since the day it began, and its popularity has steadily grown since its creation. An average of 10,000 individual guests are currently visiting The Pumamouse Website every month, many of whom return several times during each month. I am very pleased by this fact, and I hope The Pumamouse Website will continue to grow in popularity even as it will continue to grow in size. The answers to the overall size and popularity questions are simple enough for me to provide, and I trust they makes sense to anyone with an interest and some basic knowledge of this technical stuff, (which I am slowly learning through trial and error). The answer to another "FAQ" is a bit more difficult for some website visitors to understand. Actually, it is easy to understand, but apparently, it is difficult for some people to believe. By any chance, have you ever noticed the complete lack of promotions or advertisements at The Pumamouse Website, and then wondered how the website is funded? Perhaps you never realized the complete absence of any revenue generating adverts while browsing, because we seldom miss or remember a nuisance when it is not present to annoy us, but please consider these facts now. There are never any banners or pop-up advertisements to block your view while you are browsing at The Pumamouse Website, although they are very common at most other websites, (including many of those which claim to be "personal" websites despite their commercial nature). And, there are no links from The Pumamouse Website to any commercial websites. Indeed, there are no links from The Pumamouse Website to any other websites, at all. And, there is absolutely nothing being sold at The Pumamouse Website. And, there are no membership fees or dues required for its use, and there are no monetary contributions requested, and none are accepted. Everything which you see and hear at this website is offered completely free of any charge to you. I do not blame those of you who are new to the website, who may be naturally skeptical about this claim. I am well aware that the standard definition of the word "Free" is "no payment required", but by today's standards, in most cases, the more realistic definition of the word "Free" is "no apparent charge but there must be some catch somewhere". However, The Pumamouse Website is an exception to the rule. Go on – take a look around, and you will see, everything at this website is genuinely offered completely free of any charge, strictly for your possible consideration and enjoyment. And yet, there are no banners, no pop-ups, no commercial links, none of that irksome stuff which you might expect to find at most websites of this size to generate the funds needed for its existence. So, then how is The Pumamouse Website funded? Good question. The Pumamouse Website is funded wholly and solely by... The Pumamouse. Yes, you read that right. I pay a considerable monthly fee for a chunk of cyberspace so that you may visit this website as often as you wish, and I sincerely hope that you might enjoy what you find here, and visit this website often. Why? Knowing that The Pumamouse Website gives pleasure to those who kindly visit it is worth the monthly fee and the constant work which it take for me to design, create, and maintain it. Believe it or not, there are still some people in this world who genuinely feel that it is better to give than to receive. Shocking, isn't it? Truth be told, I do receive a payment of sorts for my efforts, because I derive more satisfaction from the emailed comments which I receive about The Pumamouse Website than I could ever give with it to anyone out there who is kindly visiting it and enjoying it. Now, please, go and browse for a few hours, and if the mood strikes you, please let me know what you think of my efforts! Thank you for your consideration. The Pumamouse (MaryAnne) March 2004 |
