Welcome to the "ALL NIGHT RADIO SERVICE" webpages of
The Pumamouse Website.  The following is a brief introduction to this topic, written by "The High Mucky-Muck Of South African OTR Preservation", Frans Erasmus, and South African radio enthusiast Kevan Mardon.  By clicking on the related links directly below the introduction, you may see and hear more about this particular South African radio service.  Further below on this webpage are links for the additional alternative South African radio services which were in operation during the production years of South African OTR, and below them are the standard links for the other subsections that comprise the South African OTR section of this website, followed by the usual Pumamouse Website Section links, The Pumamouse email link and, of course, the always present link to the main HOMEPAGE of The Pumamouse Website.  Enjoy!

ALL NIGHT SERVICE OF THE SABC
DEURNAG DIENS VAN DIE SAUK

Who can recall the opening theme music of the All Night Service? Who remembers the tune “Ver in die Ou Kalahari”, played by the Don Richardson Orchestra. For the people that have forgotten, the All Night Service started its broadcast when the main stream SABC stations would close for the night at midnight. The All Night Service took to the airwaves on 1 September 1964. The station was opened by Rocco Erasmus, who use to present most of the shows on the All Night Service up to his sad death in the late 1970’s.

The service would start at midnight with the programme, “All Night Requests”, followed by the Afrikaans News at 12H30. Between 12H45 and 2H15 the programme “Words of Wisdom” could be heard. It was followed by “Wakey, Wakey”. At 4H00-4H30 the progamme “Coffee Club of Radio South Africa” was heard. The station would close at 05H00 on Mondays to Saturdays. On Sundays the service would close at 06H00. The regular stations would then resume its services.

The All Night Service was heard for the last time in December 1979. A new service started between 12H00 and 02H00 called “Night Beat”. Between 02H00 and 17H00 a programme called “Music for the Night Owls” was heard.

During 1983 a new all night service started, which was called “Radio Orion”. The three main stream announchers on the service was Robin Alexander, Les Franken and Ben Theunissen.

With the SABC radio restructure on 1 January 1986, Radio Orion started at 9H30pm to 05H00am. Between 1H00am and 4H00am, Evelyn Martin hosted the programme “Under the Stars”. Between 4H00am and 5H00am, Danie Smuts was the host.

Radio Orion closed during 1990, so ending the chapter of a special All Night Service in South Africa. In today’s times, radio stations broadcast 24 hours a day, non-stop. The all night service format was therfore no longer required.

The All Night Service will fondly be remembered by the night owls and shift workers for keeping them entertained throughout the wee hours of the morning.
