| ENGLISH SERVICE “This is the English Service of the SABC”. For many years those familiar opening words were heard over the radio waves in South Africa. The English Service was the first radio station to broadcast under the banner of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). It was due to the Broadcast Act of 1936, that the SABC was formed. The Act made note of the fact that the SABC had to launch an English and Afrikaans Radio Service. The English Service started broadcasting in 1936, beating the Afrikaans Service by one year. During the many years of broadcasting the English Service underwent several name changes. It was originally known as the A programme, then in the early 1950’s it was changed to The English Service of Radio South Africa. In the late 1960’s it was changed to The English Service of the SABC. This radio service together with the Afrikaans Service and Springbok Radio was terminated on 31 December 1985. On 1 January 1986, a new English Radio Service was born in South Africa. It was called Radio South Africa. Bea Reed was the first person to be heard on this station. With the closing of Springbok Radio, which was a commercial station, commercials were introduced on this new service. The first commercial to be broadcast was “Mutual & Federal Insurance”. Cigarette commercials were banned in 1987 on this service. For many years Springbok Radio depended a lot on the support of the cigarette companies. During 1994 the name Radio South Africa disappeared and the service was renamed SAFM. To this day this station can be heard in South Africa over the ether waves. With all it’s name and identity changes this service remains the oldest Radio Service in South Africa. Frans Erasmus Johannesburg April 2002 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |
