| RADIO RSA: THE VOICE OF SOUTH AFRICA RADIO RSA: DIE STEM VAN SUID-AFRIKA Radio RSA, the old external radio service of South Africa, started broadcasting from studios in Johannesburg on high powered shortwave transmitters on 1 May 1966. The service would originally broadcast 9 languages including English, German, French, Portuguese, Swahili to Africa, Malagasy Republic, Mauritius, Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. The first German broadcast was on 5 March 1967, German broadcasts were very popular as was the French broadcasts, which was heard by several of the previous French Colonies in Africa. Radio RSA’s famous call sign use to be the “bokmakierie”, bird call. The “bokmakierie” was also used in the original Radio RSA logo. For many years Radio RSA sent quality news, actuality, music & documentary programmes, promoting South Africa to many foreign listeners. Radio RSA became an integral part of shortwave listening throughout the world. During the early 1990’s funding to this service was reduced, causing the suspension of several of it’s services, including the German service which closed on 30 April 1990. During 1992, Radio RSA was replaced by a new external service called “Channel Africa”. This service remains the official external radio service of South Africa, and can be heard over Short wave, satelite and internet broadcasts. The service currently broadcasts in 6 languages, English, French, Portuguese, Swahili, Chinyanja and Silozi. Unlike the old Radio RSA, Channel Africa’s broadcasts’ focus more to listeners on the Africa continent. Radio habits through out the world has changed, but for the many foreign listeners, Radio RSA, The voice of South Africa, will always be fondly remembered.
