| When I first began searching for South African OTR recordings within the USA, I quickly learned the sad truth that not all OTR dealers are trustworthy. Indeed, my experiences taught me that, in general, the vast majority of those who sell OTR, especially those dealers under the age of fifty who did not grow up listening to the original broadcasts, and particularly those dealers who sell it in .mp3 format, care more about the business aspect of making money than they do about the recordings which they are selling. In fact, most of the dealers whom I encountered when I first began my efforts had never bothered to listen to the recordings which they were selling. They typically had no great care for customer satisfaction, and only a precious few of the dealers had any clue whatsoever about the work and importance of OTR preservation. As a result, I quickly became wary of OTR dealers, and I learned the hard way to exercise extreme caution whenever using their services. Admittedly, I am rather stubborn by nature. I used to think that, once proven, a rule was indisputable. However, life has taught me not to be so rigid in my thinking. In fact, I have learned that there is usually at least one exception to every rule. I would like to tell you about a rare exception to my general rule of caution regarding OTR dealers. His name is Ted Davenport. He is an American by birth and residence. He is an OTR dealer. He has been collecting and preserving OTR recordings for over thirty years, and since the first day of our acquaintance, he has repeatedly proven himself to be something which, based upon my prior experiences, I did not think could possibly exist…namely, an honest, reliable, affordable source for every imaginable genre of OTR recordings. He has earned my genuine respect, my highest regard, my unreserved recommendation, and The Pumamouse's honorary title of "The High Mucky-Muck Of American OTR". Ted Davenport is the gentleman who has very kindly assisted me in acquiring and returning literally hundreds of South African OTR recordings to South Africa for inclusion in the SABC Radio Sound Archive. In my opinion, no one, including myself and all of those individuals and organizations worldwide who have benefited from Ted's assistance, has ever properly thanked him for his extraordinary efforts. How do you thank someone for moving a mountain? In February 2002, I did attempt to publicly acknowledge Ted's contributions towards the preservation of South African OTR, here at The Pumamouse Website, but I fear my words fell short of the mark, and too few website visitors have found or read the story of his involvement.
