The 1 May 1950 finally approached, after almost 2 years of planning the first national commercial radio station in South Africa was about to start. At 6H45 on Monday the 1 May 1950, the first Springbok Radio announcer, Eric Egan, placed himself in front of the microphone and with a warm and friendly voice announced, “Good Morning South Africa, welcome to Springbok Radio, the new commercial radio service of the South African Broadcasting Corporation”. So it all began, a legacy that would last for 35 years. Looking back at the programme schedules of that very first day, I was wondering how many people could still remember listening to Springbok on that very first day. To help the old brain cells along, here is the complete Springbok Radio schedule of that very first day: 06H45: The Breakfast Session (with Eric Egan) 08H30: The Farmer’s Friend 09H00: Sunbeam Time (with Sheila Raymond-Jones) 09H15: Accent on Melody 09H30: Front Page Lady (the very first serial, this serial originated from Australia) 09H45: Morning Star (with Andrew Kaye) 10H00: Sincerely Rita Marsden (another serial from Australia) 10H15: Lucky Dip (with Ken Shaw) 10H30: This is How 10H45: Marriage Register (a serial from Australia) 11H00: The Dick Haymes Show (from the USA) 11H15: Woman’s Forum (with Julie Glen) 11H30: Aan die Beminde (the first Afrikaans programme) 11H45: A Call from Les Paul 12H00: Rosemary (a serial from Australia) 12H15: The Bob Eberley Show 12H30: Musiek vir Etensuur 13H00: Tune Time 13H15: Ootmoedige Ritme 13H30: Allen Roth & the Symphony of Melody 13H45: Programme Parade 14H00: Meet the Band 14H15: Mr & Mrs 14H30: Sorrell & Son (another Australian Serial) 14H45: Movie Time 15H00: Lean Back & Listen 15H15: Nurse White (Australian Serial) 15H30: A Man called Sheppard (Australian Serial) 15H45: Music for Monday 16H15: All Visistors Ashore (Australian Serial) 16H30: The Mystery Singer (with Jack Dowle at the Organ) 16H45: Hopalong Cassidy (The Australian Version with John Morley) 17H00: This Rhythmic Age 17H15: Superman (The Australian Version with Leonard Thiele) 17H30: Lood Landroster (with Jan Pohl) 17H45: Nommer Asseblief 18H00: V K K Program (with Bertus Cronje) 18H15: Plate Album (Boeremusiek with Jan Pohl) 18H30: Casa Cugat (with Xavier Cugat) 18H45: Follow the Stars: Bing Crosby (with Evelyn Levison) 19H00: Travellers Quartet-Hour 19H15: Dark Stranger (Australian Serial) 19H30: Bottle Castle 19H45: The Stars Sing 20H00: Lux Radio Theatre: “The Old Dark House” by JB Priestley 21H00: The Humphrey Bishop Cavalcade 21H30: Murder Scrapbook 21H45: Concert Miniature (with Tony Faulkner) 22H00: Top Tune Time (with David Gordon) 22H15: The Way to Success 22H30: The Tex Beneke Show (from the USA) 23H00: Close Down As can be seen from this first day of broadcasting on Springbok Radio, many of the serials originated from Australia. It was said back then that buying programmes from Australia and the USA was much cheaper than to produce locally. However that changed dramatically in 1955 when on average 85% of programmes were local content. That remained so for many years. If one looks at the programme schedules of the 1960's, 1970's, and 1980's, the entire programme content was South African. The programme schedule was taken from: “Radio, the weekly journal of the South African Broadcasting Corporation” dated Friday, 28 April 1950. Frans Erasmus Johannesburg, South Africa February 2002 |
