The 1 May 1950 finally approached, after almost 2 years of planning the first national commercial radio station in South Africa was about to start.

At 6H45 on Monday the 1 May 1950, the first Springbok Radio announcer, Eric Egan, placed himself in front of the microphone and with a warm and friendly voice announced, “Good Morning South Africa, welcome to Springbok Radio, the new commercial radio service of the South African Broadcasting Corporation”.  So it all began, a legacy that would last for 35 years.

Looking back at the programme schedules of that very first day, I was wondering how many people could still remember listening to Springbok on that very first day. To help the old brain cells along, here is the complete Springbok Radio schedule of that very first day:

06H45: The Breakfast Session (with Eric Egan)
08H30: The Farmer’s Friend
09H00: Sunbeam Time (with Sheila Raymond-Jones)

22H00: Top Tune Time (with David Gordon)
22H15: The Way to Success
22H30: The Tex Beneke Show (from the USA)
23H00: Close Down

As can be seen from this first day of broadcasting on Springbok Radio, many of the serials originated from Australia. It was said back then that buying programmes from Australia and the USA was much cheaper than to produce locally. However that changed dramatically in 1955 when on average 85% of programmes were local content. That remained so for many years. If one looks at the programme schedules of the 1960's, 1970's, and 1980's, the entire programme content was South African.

The programme schedule was taken from: “Radio, the weekly journal of the South African Broadcasting Corporation” dated Friday, 28 April 1950.
