I confess, I have an odd habit of creating words whenever I feel that those already in existence fall short of fully expressing or defining my thoughts. A perfect example of this habit is my development and use of the word "bikkie". By my definition, a "bikkie" is any sort of a blanket, quilt, afghan, cozy covering which has been originally designed and created by hand specifically for an individual. While every handmade item is a treasure, a "bikkie" is even more unique and precious because it is designed and created with the recipient in mind. I encourage anyone with a desire to make an extra special gift for someone, and anyone with an ounce of creativity and a bit of courage, to venture away from the average and attempt the extraordinary. I can guarantee, the possibilities are endless, and if you persevere, you might be delighted with your results. For example, it is lovely to be able to say to someone, "I crocheted this afghan for you." However, it is even more rewarding to be able to tell the lucky someone that you crocheted a "bikkie" for them, using their favorite colors, and that you personalized it further by calculating the number of stitches or rows based upon their birth date or anniversary date or any other uniquely significant numbers. Another requirement for a "bikkie" is that it must be one of a kind. If a "bikkie" is designed and created for someone, the same exact pattern should never be used again. So, for example, if a "bikkie" is made for someone, and their favorite color and birth date are used in its design, the same "bikkie" should not be made for someone else who just happens to have the same favorite color and same birth date. That would be cheating! Each "bikkie" must be a singular work of personalized comfort if it is to be considered a "bikkie" at all. Finally, and most importantly, a "bikkie" must be made with love. A little prayer of good intention for the recipient’s good health and happiness should be worked into every stitch. Good luck! The Pumamouse (MaryAnne) October 2003

Pssst!!! Don't be afraid to experiment. As long as you create it with love, it will be the bestest "bikkie" in the whole universe! Squeak!!!
PUMAMOUSE POINT TO PONDER: In South Africa, the word "bakkie" is a slang term for a pick-up truck. I highly recommend keeping a "Bikkie" in the back of your "bakkie"! You never know when it might come in handy! Squeak!
Being "as snug as a bug in a rug" is no match to the comfort and warmth of being "as cozy as a mouse in a Bikkie"!
