| Welcome to the "VINTAGE RADIO ON RADIO TODAY!" subsection of The Pumamouse Website. |
| The Johannesburg community radio station, known as "1485AM Gold" as of 1 July 2004, was formerly known as "Radio Today 1485AM". The "Vintage Radio" series, created, produced, and compiled by Frans Erasmus, consisted mainly of South African OTR rebroadcasts, including mostly Springbok Radio material. Many of the nostalgic recordings which comprised the "Vintage Radio" series were located and obtained by The Pumamouse within the USA, and returned to Frans in South Africa so that they could be properly preserved, heard, and enjoyed again. (Information regarding "The Mother Lode" of South African OTR in the USA is available in the "Pumamouse Pieces Of The Puzzle" subsection of this website.) There were also several new productions which were organized by Frans, and which aired as part of the "Vintage Radio" series. (Information regarding those new productions is available in the "New Productions" subsection of this website.) The "Vintage Radio" series aired without interruption on Radio Today 1485AM every Thursday night from 7pm to 8pm, beginning on 8 August 2002 and ending on 17 June 2004. During that period, this subsection provided information regarding the "Vintage Radio" series, such as important announcements and monthly broadcast schedules. Now that the "Vintage Radio" series has ended, this subsection will remain mainly as a reference. I hope that it is useful and interesting to someone out there other than myself. And now, dear friends, a summarizing "shoot-straight-from-the-hip" commentary by The Pumamouse… Being that the "Vintage Radio" series has ended, I feel that a few facts need to be reiterated and stated very candidly for the record. "The Mother Lode" of South African OTR recordings which survived for over thirty years within the USA, due entirely to the preservation efforts of American OTR enthusiasts, collectors, and dealers, was found and obtained by myself with the kind assistance of Ted Davenport (The High Mucky-Muck Of American OTR, and owner of Radio Memories™). I returned the material to South Africa for inclusion in the SABC Radio Sound Archive and for rebroadcast. Frans painstakingly re-mastered the old recordings and created and compiled the weekly "Vintage Radio" series, and he also did all of the grueling work behind the scenes as he routinely sought and obtained the necessary permission from the SABC to rebroadcast the recordings. Yes, you read that right. Even though we donated the material to the SABC, permission for its rebroadcast was sought and obtained each month, for each and every old show that aired. The official request for permission was and still is demanded by the law. And, as if that nonsensical inconvenience were not enough to boggle my mind and rub The Pumamouse's fur the wrong way, for the past two years, other individuals and organizations within South Africa have boldly taken credit for the work which was routinely being done by Frans and myself. Indeed, the truth of the American connection and Ted Davenport's assistance in securing this material was entirely and conveniently omitted by every South African newspaper and radio reference to the "Vintage Radio" series. Well, now you know the truth. If ever the "Vintage Radio" series is reinstated anywhere, it will be because the sole creator, producer, and compiler of the series, Frans Erasmus, chooses to reinstates it, and the news will be announced here on The Pumamouse Website. Meanwhile, if you are craving a healthy dose of OTR, more sizeable than the free sound file snippets which I am able to provide at The Pumamouse Website, I strongly recommend that you have a look at Ted Davenport's Radio Memories™ website, located at www.radiomemories.com Thank you for your interest and your consideration.
