A Few Facts About The Statue Of Liberty

The 152 foot granite statue is contructed of hand-hammered copper plate.  It stands proudly on a 142 foot granite pedestal.  The Statue of Liberty is located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor.  Within view of the Statue of Liberty is Ellis Island, New York, which is the entry point for millions of immigrants to America.

The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on 28 October 1886.  Originally, it was placed upon a granite pedestal inside the courtyard of the star-shaped walls of Fort Wood.  The United States Lighthouse Board was responsibility for the operation of the Statue of Liberty until 1901, then the duty was transferred to the War Department.  A Presidential Proclamation declared Fort Wood, including the Statue of Liberty, a National Monument on 15 October 1924, and the monument's boundary was set at the outer edge of Fort Wood.  In 1933, the care and administration of the National Monument was transferred to the National Park Service.  On 7 September 1937, the boundary was enlarged to encompass all of Bedloe's Island.  In 1956, the island's name was changed to Liberty Island.  On 11 May 1965,  Ellis Island was also transferred to the National Park Service and became part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument.

The following poem by Emma Lazarus was written in 1883 to help with fundraising for the Pedestal.  A bronze plaque enscribed with the poem was mounted in the base of the Statue in 1903.

THE NEW COLOSSUS
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
with conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
a mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame,
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
with silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
